Reinforcing commands in puppy training is essential when you are engaged in the “dog walk”. Throughout the neighborhood, your new puppy will encounter other dogs, kids, unfamiliar sounds, and even insects in the grass. A puppy that is not properly introduced to these sites, sounds, and objects can become skittish. The dog leash is a great instrument in puppy training.

The collar should fit your puppy properly. Most people prefer to use a harness over a collar. The harness gives you more control over the puppy and prevents him from squirming out of the collar.

Purchase a leash that is comfortable for you. Keep your puppy on the right side of you when walking. Walking him around the block once a day will familiarize him with the neighborhood kids and pets.

Some puppy owners invest in a dog trainer class. This is a good start. In a dog training class, you will be taught how to manage your pup on a leash and how to give the basic commands.

If you’ve successfully trained your puppy on a leash, he is less likely to pull you down the street. Instead, he will walk right beside you sniffing the grass and enjoying the sights.

Puppy training your pup properly requires a commitment. Leash walking is something most people give up on. The proof is in your neighborhood. Just look at how many dogs pull their owner’s down the street. Do you think that dog was properly trained as a pup? Probably not!
